Macram\u00e9 and other craft seminars, agricultural exhibits, and music activities are on display each day at <\/em>Homestead Craft Village<\/em><\/strong> and featured at <\/em>Homestead Heritage’s 37th Annual Homestead Fair, open from November 29 through Dec. 1, followed by two weekends of the Homestead Holiday Market, December 7 and 14.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

WACO, Texas, Oct. 31, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In the hands of a macram\u00e9 artist, yarn and knots can create almost anything. And guided by Benetta Mickens, who creates and teaches the art of macram\u00e9 at Homestead Heritage, almost anyone can experience the satisfaction of creating beautiful and functional art. As the yarn begins to take shape, Benetta can see her students\u2019 eyes light up.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you can make useful things with just a few knots, it\u2019s very rewarding for beginners,\u201d said Benetta. \u201cThey see their artwork become something useful right before their eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the earliest recorded uses of macram\u00e9-style knots appeared in the carvings of the Babylonians and Assyrians. But macram\u00e9 as we know it now dates back to the Arabic weavers of the 13th century. These decorative knots created ornamental edges on Persian rugs, adding beauty while keeping the woven fabric from unraveling.<\/p>\n

This gave rise to the Arabic word migramah<\/em>, meaning \u201cknotted fringes,\u201d followed by the Turkish word makrama<\/em>, and then to the French word we use today: macram\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Later, Moor sailors contributed to the popularity of macram\u00e9 during their voyages from North Africa to Europe, with each sailor contributing knowledge of various knots to collaborate on projects to pass the downtime while at sea. When they came into port, the items would be sold for profit and shared among those who had contributed.<\/p>\n

Benetta was raised in the Homestead Heritage but moved to Austin for a few years before choosing to return to the community and become an artisan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe community here is very welcoming and supportive, encouraging me in my craft,\u201d said Benetta. \u201cOne of the things I love about macram\u00e9 is that it can be combined with many of the other crafts here. I can make plant hangers for ceramic vases, and incorporate wood, leather, steel, and fabric into my work. I get ideas when I visit the other shops of how I can incorporate their art into mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benetta and other artisans invite guests to participate in classes available year-round, Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Homestead Craft Village located north of Waco, a few minutes off the interstate or to make plans to visit Homestead Heritage’s 37th Annual Homestead Fair, open from November 29 through Dec. 1, followed by two weekends of the Homestead Holiday Market, December 7 and 14.<\/p>\n
