Snooki\u2019s journey\u2014from beach rescue to lifelong care\u2014highlights the importance of partnerships between wildlife rehabilitation centers and accredited zoos<\/em><\/p>\n

After nearly a decade of rehabilitation and care, \u201cSnooki,\u201d a 310-pound female loggerhead sea turtle with an outsized personality and a story of perseverance, has officially arrived at her forever home\u2014the\u00a0Minnesota Zoo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her journey began in September 2016<\/strong>, when she was found stranded along the beaches of Cape May, New Jersey. Rescued by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Snooki was transferred the next month to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center<\/strong> in North Carolina, where she captured hearts with her big attitude, love for the spotlight, and signature splash that kept volunteers smiling.<\/p>\n

Despite years of medical treatment, Snooki was ultimately deemed non-releasable<\/strong> due to a spinal injury that left her positively buoyant<\/strong>, preventing her from diving and resting on the ocean floor. But her spirit and charm made her a beloved ambassador for sea turtles everywhere\u2014and inspired a multi-year effort to find her the perfect forever home.<\/p>\n

A Perfect Fit in the Midwest<\/strong>
Now, Snooki will call the Minnesota Zoo\u2019s Atlantic Reef exhibit<\/strong> home\u2014a 250,000-gallon habitat<\/strong>, fifty times larger than her previous pool. Here, she will have more room to explore, encounter new species, and enjoy an enriched environment under the expert care of the Zoo\u2019s aquarium and veterinary teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is truly a dream home for Snooki,\u201d said Kathy Zagzebski<\/strong>, Executive Director of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center<\/strong>. \u201cWe are thrilled she\u2019ll be moving into a 250,000-gallon tank, surrounded by experienced staff who know exactly how to care for turtles like her. As a Midwesterner myself, I know how powerful it is to see ocean animals up close\u2014Snooki will inspire guests to care about the ocean, even from a thousand miles away. She tells the story of all sea turtles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zagzebski added with a smile, \u201cSnooki is a big personality\u2014our number one \u2018adopted\u2019 turtle and a bit of a diva. She\u2019s been known to splash visitors on purpose, especially if a camera\u2019s pointed her way. I hope the Minnesota Zoo team is ready for her!\u201d<\/p>\n

A New Chapter at the Minnesota Zoo<\/strong>
Snooki\u2019s relocation was a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Zoo and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (KBSTRRC) team. After a long-awaited U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permitting process and fundraising campaign by the KBSTRRC team to charter a private flight, Snooki arrived in Minnesota on<\/strong> October 27<\/strong>, landing at St. Paul\u2019s Holman Field before making her way to the Zoo.<\/p>\n

Noetzli continued, \u201cSnooki\u2019s story highlights why partnerships between zoos and wildlife rescue organizations are so important. Many rescued sea turtles can\u2019t be released back into the wild due to injuries from boat strikes or entanglements. Accredited zoos like ours give them a second chance\u2014offering lifelong care while educating the public about the challenges sea turtles face in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Jersey Girl to Ocean Ambassador<\/strong>
Known affectionately as a Jersey girl tempered by Southern charm, Snooki is adored by volunteers and fans alike for her spirited antics, expressive moods, and occasional splashing fits. Her favorite foods include mackerel, squid, and herring, though she\u2019s been known to ignore live crabs entirely.<\/p>\n

While Snooki is unable to return to the ocean, her impact will be far-reaching. As Zagzebski put it, \u201cIf she weren\u2019t injured, she\u2019d be a nesting female contributing to the survival of her species. Now, she\u2019ll inspire thousands of visitors to care about sea turtles<\/strong>, ocean health, and the interconnectedness of our planet. As we say, if you save sea turtles, you save the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snooki will remain in a smaller acclimation pool behind the scenes for several weeks<\/strong> before moving into the Atlantic Reef exhibit, where she\u2019ll join a variety of ocean species in her new home.<\/p>\n
