According to Dr. Sam Goundar, Senior Lecturer in Information Technology at RMIT Vietnam, Vietnam’s technology industry has experienced an impressive decade of growth with its strength as the final assembly point for high-end electronic products. Major players such as Foxconn, Samsung, LG Electronics, Intel, and Luxshare not only utilize Vietnam’s quality labor force but also appreciate the low-risk export environment. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

With rapid development momentum, Vietnam is gradually asserting its position in the global semiconductor supply chain, with projected revenue reaching 21.45 billion USD by 2025. However, the latest shock comes from Washington, as the US government announced tariffs of up to 46% on many exports from Vietnam. Although President Trump recently announced a 90-day postponement of the tariffs, the uncertainty has left many businesses worried.<\/p>\n

The 46% tariff imposed by the US, if applied, could lead to disruptions in the supply chain, increased costs due to the need to find alternative markets or raw materials, and reluctance from international investors. This reduces Vietnam’s attractiveness in the eyes of foreign investors. Many companies, such as Luxshare, a component supplier for Apple, are considering shifting some production to other countries, including the US, to mitigate the impact of tariffs. If this trend spreads, Vietnam risks being excluded from Apple’s global supply chain map.<\/p>\n

It’s not just semiconductors; electronics such as phones, laptops, and home appliances, which are export pillars of Vietnam, are also under heavy pressure. US consumers are increasingly price-sensitive, while countries like India, Mexico, and Eastern Europe enjoy more favorable tariffs. “Investors who once saw Vietnam as a stable bright spot amidst global geopolitical volatility are now more cautious,” said Dr. Sam Goundar.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Citing the Business Confidence Index (BCI) for the first quarter, Mr. Bruno Jaspaert, Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham), said that more than half of businesses (52%) consider the global economic downturn and volatility in international trade to be the top concerns. Among them, up to 39% of surveyed businesses predict that pricing strategies \u2013 including tariff fluctuations and operating costs \u2013 will be a major challenge. 36% participants predict that market demand and revenue will face moderate to significant difficulties.<\/p>\n

However, he believes that European businesses appreciate Vietnam’s flexibility in international relations and have confidence in Vietnam’s skillful diplomacy in navigating global trade tensions. “68% particiapnts of European business leaders say they would recommend Vietnam as an investment destination \u2013 demonstrating their long-term commitment,” said Bruno Jaspaert. Although most businesses have not yet changed their investment strategies, Bruno Jaspaert believes that the need for strong reforms to strengthen confidence and enhance national competitiveness is becoming extremely urgent.<\/p>\n

Businesses participating in the survey identified several areas for improvement to enhance Vietnam’s attractiveness to foreign investors, with infrastructure development (37%) considered the top priority. In addition, businesses also emphasized the need for streamlining administrative procedures (29%); easing visa and work permit processes for foreign experts (24%); and increasing transparency in regulation and law enforcement (21%).<\/p>\n

“These priorities show that European businesses expect clearer improvements to strengthen their long-term confidence,” said Bruno Jaspaert. While affirming that FDI inflows into Vietnam are unlikely to decrease immediately in the short term, Ms. Phi Thi Huong Nga, Head of the Industrial and Construction Statistics Department, General Statistics Office, said that these tariffs, if applied and prolonged, could increase product costs and reduce the competitiveness of businesses exporting to the US market.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Many large FDI corporations producing and exporting groups of computers, electronic products and components, machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts, telephones and components, etc., may consider shifting some production and business operations back to their home countries or to other countries to reduce concentration risk. In addition, new FDI investors exploring the Vietnamese market will also have concerns about sustainability when entering Vietnam and may look to other countries as alternatives.<\/p>\n

To attract FDI in the new context, with existing advantages, Ms. Phi Thi Huong Nga believes that Vietnam needs to continue efforts to reform administrative and customs procedures, improve the quality of human resources, accelerate the development of synchronous infrastructure, and strengthen incentives to attract FDI into high-tech and sustainable sectors… Vietnam also needs to strengthen bilateral dialogue with the US to clarify the elements of bilateral trade interests between the two countries, affirming that Vietnam is a fair and reliable trading partner.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is necessary to continue to proactively, actively and use many channels and different measures to balance the trade balance between the two countries… Along with that, it is necessary to improve the factors that the US considers Vietnam to be protecting, engaging in unfair competition, and diversify export markets, improve product quality to reduce dependence on the US market. “Relevant agencies should provide early information to businesses about countervailing duties, helping businesses prepare data and be ready to respond to protect their interests in the US market. From there, propose solutions to minimize the impact of tariffs on manufacturers and exporters,” Ms. Nga stated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
