Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 10, 2026 — The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (MIT CTL) and Mecalux have jointly developed an artificial intelligence-powered simulator that optimizes inventory distribution across multiple warehouses in the same logistics network. Called Genetic Evaluation & Simulation for Inventory Strategy (GENESIS), the platform uses advanced machine learning models to analyze thousands of scenarios and determine the ideal stock levels at each warehouse, as well as the best timing for replenishment.
The AI simulator factors in real-world variables such as regional demand forecasts, transportation costs, and each warehouse’s operational capacity. It allows companies to safely test different inventory replenishment policies without disrupting actual operations.
“The genetic algorithm lets us run multiple simulations with different parameters until we find the most efficient logistics strategy. Companies can then compare scenarios and choose the one that best suits their operations,” said Dr. Matthias Winkenbach, Director of Research at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics and the Intelligent Logistics Systems Lab.
Once data and variables are entered, GENESIS instantly delivers the optimal solution together with advanced statistical dashboards. Users can easily analyze key indicators such as consumption patterns, regions with high demand volatility, SKUs most at risk of stockouts, or warehouses facing supply issues.
Redistribute Before Purchasing
One of GENESIS’s most powerful features is its ability to rebalance inventory across the entire network. Instead of automatically placing new orders with suppliers, the system first checks whether it is more cost-effective to transfer stock from another facility that has surplus inventory. This helps companies cut costs significantly and make the most of existing stock.
The platform also recommends optimal transportation strategies — for example, consolidating shipments to maximize truckload efficiency or fulfilling orders from the closest location to reduce delivery times and expenses.
“The real challenge wasn’t finding the right algorithm — it was making it fast enough to be practical. We built GENESIS from the ground up to evaluate thousands of scenarios simultaneously rather than one by one. What used to take days now takes minutes, so companies can use it for real tactical planning, not just theoretical studies,” said Rodrigo Hermosilla, Research Engineer at the MIT Intelligent Logistics Systems Lab.
Unlike highly technical tools reserved for specialists, GENESIS is designed to be user-friendly for both technical teams and business decision-makers. “Our goal is to help companies minimize the total cost of their logistics network while delivering the highest possible service level,” said Javier Carrillo, CEO of Mecalux.
Upcoming AI Applications
GENESIS is one of the first concrete results of the strategic partnership between Mecalux and MIT CTL. The collaboration is now moving into a new phase focused on applying AI to additional logistics processes, including internal replenishment, digital twins for high-density automated storage systems, and slotting optimization.
